Abstract:

Purpose of review: Neurologic complications are a rare but devastating event in scoliosis surgery. A thorough preoperative work-up and effective intraoperative monitoring of the spinal cord may reduce the incidence. The purpose of this review is to explore the current strategies for preventing neurologic injuries in scoliosis surgery and strategies to manage them when they do occur.

Recent findings: This review discusses the recent literature on the incidence, preoperative work-up, intraoperative monitoring, and strategies in dealing with neurologic complications in scoliosis surgery. In addition, a review of the how to maintain a therapeutic relation with the patient and family is performed.

Summary: The information that is presented here may benefit those who perform scoliosis surgery to assist them to minimize the risk of neurologic complications in scoliosis surgery and how to manage them once they do occur.
