The purpose of this article is to outline the role of a self-reported evaluative instrument and classification system in hip arthroscopy outcome assessment. Current instruments related to musculoskeletal hip pathology are reviewed. Evidence to support the Hip Outcome Score (HOS) as an outcome instrument for hip arthroscopy is summarized. A classification system that can be used to categorize individuals with labral tears is also introduced. This AICL classification system can be used to describe the results of hip arthroscopy according to subgroups of patients with similar characteristics. It is hopeful that these tools will allow for hip arthroscopy outcome information to be more uniformly collected and reported.
