Claridge, Richard J MD, FRCSC Abstract: Many orthopaedic surgeons consider ankle arthrodesis the gold standard for treatment of end-stage ankle degeneration. Replacement arthroplasty has made significant advances in recent years, but a well-constructed ankle arthrodesis remains the most reliable treatment. This paper describes a reliable technique using the time-tested principles of the tension band and modern internal fixation. The technique evolved from a combination of prior experience and trial and error. This evolution has resulted in a technique that has become a workhorse for the end stage ankle.
